Welcome! I’m Sam (she/her). It’s great to meet you!

I have experience working with families and individuals of all ages, but I have a true passion for working with teens and young adults. Before embarking on my journey as a clinical social worker, my job experiences have always revolved around working with youth, families, and young adults. My career path was shaped and inspired by my roles as a camp counselor and college advisor, as well as my own struggles with anxiety. I understand how difficult it can be to reach out for support and share your story with someone new. I would be honored to have the opportunity to collaborate with you and support you in reaching your goals - whatever those may be. Before joining Starling Family Services, I worked as an outpatient therapist at a local agency where I supported children, teens, families, and adults virtually and as a school-based therapist. I have experience supporting clients with varied backgrounds and diagnoses, including anxiety, depression, and trauma related disorders. I received my Master’s in Social Work from UNC Chapel Hill in 2021, with a focus on Child & Adolescent Health. I also have experience supporting survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, and survivors’ families.

When I am not working, I enjoy hiking and camping with my partner, creating art, rock climbing, and spending time with my two cats, Nova and Nala.

My Approach

My approach is compassionate, accepting, and client-centered. I know what it’s like to be on the other side of the therapeutic relationship. Therapy can sometimes feel awkward, uncomfortable, and even a little scary; especially for children and teens. I love to incorporate games, art, and humor to help put folks at ease and build connections. The therapist/client relationship is a collaborative partnership. You are the expert of your life and bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, and strengths. My goal is to work together and support you based on your needs and goals by offering my resources, tools, and clinical interventions. My therapy sessions often include art, play, and mindfulness, are a space to share and feel heard without fear of judgment, and provide an opportunity to learn and practice new skills.

As a clinical social worker and a white, cis, able-bodied, queer woman, I am committed to lifelong learning and engaging in anti-racist and anti-oppressive work within my professional career and personal life. I am affirming of the LGBTQIA+ community and center trauma-informed care in my work.
