I’m so glad you found your way here! I’m Laura (she/her), owner and therapist at Starling Family Services. I’ve been a licensed counselor since 2013 and have extensive experience working with individuals and families in a variety of public and private settings. Before my training as a counselor, I lived abroad in both Mexico and Central America working with refugee and migrant populations. In past lives, I have been a teacher, door-to-door fundraiser, barista, nanny and bilingual community health worker.

I identify as a cis, het white woman. I am an active ally with all marginalized identities and identify as an activist, feminist, anti-racist and anti-oppressive therapist. I am the product of a big and deeply loving Southern family, with our fair share of intergenerational trauma. Engaging in my own therapy continues to enrich and improve my life. I’m also a parent who struggled to conceive, and ended up with a (beautiful) family story much different than the one I first imagined. My identities, along with my professional and personal experiences, deeply inform my work as a therapist.

When I’m not working I’m hiking at the Eno with my family, taking a new class, or making forts and mud pies with my kids. I was born and raised in NC and have been here my whole life, aside from years living and traveling abroad. I’ve been in Durham since 2009 and am proud to call it home.

My Ideal Client

•individuals and couples struggling with an infertility diagnosis or trouble conceiving

•couples working to more equitably divide emotional labor and mental load in their partnerships

•parents wanting to enjoy parenting more, stress less, and prioritize their own needs alongside their kids’

•women grappling with perfectionism and people-pleasing who have trouble relaxing, accessing joy and finding work/life balance

My Approach

My approach is warm, accepting, collaborative and goal-oriented. I use humor, poetry, music, arts and direct skills practice in conjunction with traditional talk therapy. My style is direct and gently challenging; I affirm and support clients where they are, while also encouraging growth through breaking old habits. Many clients are ready to talk each time they arrive in session, while others, particularly kids and teens, are a little unsure about where to start and what to say. I am adept at putting folks at ease through playing games, cracking jokes, sharing food and creating an easy space. I also come to each session with an idea of where to go next based on the last session, and I am comfortable directing clients to identify and begin to work on “what’s next.”

With my background in Sociology and Women’s Studies, systems are always relevant in my work with individuals and families receiving therapy. I have an anti-oppression lens and am an actively anti-racist therapist, parent and community member. I believe that critiquing the systems we live in is an integral step toward providing culturally-competent therapy. I am especially well-equipped to provide a feminist lens when helping families with more traditional gender roles balance household chores, emotional labor and childcare. I am affirming of all LGBTQIA+ clients and families of all makes and models. Lastly, I am a provider fiercely in favor of reproductive justice for all and proudly offer services to pregnant people navigating reproductive decision making from a client-centered perspective.
